چکیده

Coral reefs have undergone profound ecological changes over recent decades. Areas formerly covered by scleractinian coral species are now often overgrown by macroalgae. In Martinique (West Indies), this phenomenon has lead to the colonisation of numerous coral reefs by algae, amongst which Sargassum is one of the most prominent. This study focuses on potential defence molecules produced by Sargassum polyceratium. The hexane dipping method was employed to extract surface molecules on fresh material, and their bioactivities were assessed against bacteria (marine and estuarine), and marine tropical invertebrates wan annelid (Pseudonereis sp.), a bivalve (Codakia orbicularis) and a sea urchin (Diadema antillarum)x. Extracts were active against all microorganisms tested (MICs150 or 300 mg ml), early stages of development in Pseudonereis sp. (MICs100 mg ml) and embryos of C. orbicularis and D. antillarum (MICs5 mg ml), suggesting the production of defence compounds by S. polyceratium.

The role of chemical antifouling defence in the invasion success of Sargassum muticum: A comparison of native and invasive brown algae

Competition and fouling defence are important traits that may facilitate invasions by non-indigenous species. The 'novel weapons hypothesis' (NWH) predicts that the invasive success of exotic species is closely linked to the possession of chemical defence compounds that the recipient community in the new range is not adapted to. In order to assess whether chemical defence traits contribute to i...

Sargassum kendrickii (Fucales, Phaeophyceae), a new species of subgenus Phyllotrichia from southern Australia

Sargassum kendrickii N. Goldberg et Huisman, sp. nov. is described from subtidal habitats in the Esperance region, southern Western Australia. The new species belongs to the subgenus Phyllotrichia and can be distinguished from all previously described species in the morphology of its lateral branches, which are pinnate, alternately arranged, and have serrated margins. Vesicles are absent and re...

Comparison of antifouling properties of native and invasive Sargassum (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) species

The invasiveness of algal species can be facilitated by chemo-ecological traits that allow the establishment of invasive species in a highly competitive environment. Anti-bacterial, anti-quorum sensing, anti-diatom and anti-larval properties of the invasive brown macroalga Sargassum muticum and three native Sargassum species from Oman waters were compared in laboratory and field experiments to ...

Pelagic Sargassum community change over a 40-year period: temporal and spatial variability

Pelagic forms of the brown algae (Phaeophyceae) Sargassum spp. and their conspicuous rafts are defining characteristics of the Sargasso Sea in the western North Atlantic. Given rising temperatures and acidity in the surface ocean, we hypothesized that macrofauna associated with Sargassum in the Sargasso Sea have changed with respect to species composition, diversity, evenness, and sessile epibi...

Phylogenetic Tree Analysis of the Cold-Hot Nature of Traditional Chinese Marine Medicine for Possible Anticancer Activity

Traditional Chinese Marine Medicine (TCMM) represents one of the medicinal resources for research and development of novel anticancer drugs. In this study, to investigate the presence of anticancer activity (AA) displayed by cold or hot nature of TCMM, we analyzed the association relationship and the distribution regularity of TCMMs with different nature (613 TCMMs originated from 1,091 species...
